Corniglia is the smallest and most elevated of the five villages of Cinque Terre, perched dramatically on a rocky promontory about 100 metres above the Ligurian Sea. Unlike the other Cinque Terre villages, Corniglia does not have a harbour and is surrounded by steep terraced vineyards and olive groves, giving it a quieter and more rural character. Visitors arriving by train must climb the famous Lardarina, a long staircase of 377 steps, to reach the village, although a shuttle bus is also available. From Corniglia's narrow lanes and viewpoints, spectacular panoramas stretch along the rugged coastline, while the village itself offers a more peaceful glimpse of traditional Ligurian life away from the larger tourist crowds.
